More Lego-Architecture

I’d call this a materials story.

LEGO_Architecture_FW_2-800x600

Steel. Glass. Stone. Now you can add Legos® to that mix. Lego Architecture kits include everything you need build your own model of some of your favorite landmarks. We’re especially excited about their partnership with the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. Get your very own replica of Falling Water (above) or the Guggenheim, ready to be painstakingly assembled and enjoyed. The release of these sets coincided with the May 15 opening of the Wright exhibit at the Guggenheim, which celebrates the 50th anniversary of the opening of that landmark structure. The exhibit runs through August 23. The kits can be purchased here.

Brand Invasion

Ran across this and thought I'd share. A blogger documented her day in a visual way expressing her interaction with all the brand experiences she had. Pretty amazing to see the impact of how
many brand we touch and interact with on a day to day basis.

DK Rebrand

Motion house Digital Kitchen rebrands with new skin and updated work. Check it out. The
typography is a nod to Iron Maiden (nice!). Not sure I get the animal reference but sounds like
its probably insider. Like how they made the site a coffee table for conversation, blog, staff bios and profiles, etc. They managed to make a motion house seem human instead of robotic.

A Better Way

I ran across this on Creativity's design blog. A really different approach to how brands can better themselves and others by providing some leadership in terms of strategic direction. It's worth the read.

Best of Boulder

Moxie Sozo does some really fun and technical design work. You can check out their site here. Based out of Boulder, Colorado they do the usually fare of climbing, outdoor sport stuff along but in a really unique way without a true house style. Packaging, print, interactive.

Number 1(7)

Chances are if you have a pulse you've seen their work. An amazing range from identity to editorial to tv motion graphics, number 17 is an amazing work in progress. From elaborate to simple to everything in-between number 17 avoids a stylistic "look" instead actually create niche looks for each of their clients.

Creativity Blog

New blog from the folks at Creativity magazine who've recently pulled back the number of print issues. The blog is a nice addition to the Creativity content well.... My only critique here is that they hired a Pentagram designer to do the logo and honestly it gives me hope that I could one day work at Pentagram as I don't think the designer really pulled out his A-game to deliver on an original idea here. I'm always surprised when I see the big shops deliver logos for corporations because most of the time they are generally lackluster and the sad thing is later finding out how much money was paid (wasted) for junior-designer level work.

Surface Design

Microsoft is set to debut Surface in a home environment and it makes you wonder where Apple is hiding their counter. It is usually the reverse, Apple debuts something new, Microsoft waits a year or five then boom, their counter-attack (plus all the patches that come along after to fix incomplete product launches). This time around Surface from Microsoft is screaming to hit the consumer and Apple is nowhere to be found. I'm sure Steve Job's has something cooking up behind locked fortress walls because if he doesn't this may be the first time ever that Microsoft is bring something to market first.

Ace in NY

I love the Ace Hotel chain. Personality, character, art, etc. and now when I go to NY I can finally book a room. The Ace has hit Manhattan! They always do a great job with bringing the local flavor and personality of wherever they set up shop. Their is a Jones-Soda-esque' quality to their marketing and branding and the architecture of each hotel is really unique and definitely not beige and expected. In a world of mass-market chains and same-ness the Ace has created their own niche chain that speaks to the flavor and culture of each new hotel opening. Celebrate un-sameness and check out the Ace next time you roll into town...

Godin Speaks

I'm going to start using the blog to talk more about design and still share great examples from popular culture. More insights from my experiences and less random postings of cool things. This means more in-depth postings but perhaps not as frequent (was getting a bit overboard with 15-20 postings a day). I still have design commitments of my own but hope to bring some revelations from those to the masses as a part of bringing the design discussion to designers and non-designers alike, the more real-world tales I can share the better.

Design as Equalizer

I'm hearing more and more about design from non-designers lately. With sour economic times and more product parity across multiple industries design is often used as the tie-breaker. Smart design-driven brands like Target, Apple, BMW, etc. all use design as a selling tool. It's great to see value tied to design and to have such a public conversation about design by non-designers. We creative folks often drink the Kool-Aid a bit too much on the design-front and spend much of our time trying to convince non-savvy design-minded folks, sales people, clients, etc. about why they should pick this concept over that one or how typography, illustration, photography, video, packaging, etc. all play into the consumers emotional connection with product but until that conversation happens amongst the non-designers we still all have a long way to go. It helps that the media has picked up on the design trend-wagon and not gotten off as quick as they usually do. Magazines like Time, Fast Company, Dwell, etc. all champion the brilliant minds, teams, etc. behind the design of everyday objects these days. Overall I'd have to say that the more education leads to better designed products, more functional objects and more liveable environments through city planning, landscaping, architecture, etc. Design in the corporate world has a long way to go and at the higher executive levels squeezed in-between sales, marketing, product, etc. there needs to be a position for design to sit and help bring everything together.
